Victor Granger, now a theologian, is still haunted by the memory of the immortal who saved him in 1944...He pursues his quest, convinced that this man is none other than Cain, the brother and murderer of Abel, condemned by God to eternal wandering.
His investigation runs into another quest: that for cold fusion. The mystery man shows great interest in it and, consequently, so do Victor and his companions. They leave New York, and return to Europe in the hope of picking up his trail once more.
