Summary Résumé en Français

Phoenix: a legendary bird that symbolises the cycles of deaths and resurrections.
Resilience: the individual aptitude to face the major crises of life.
Jung brings up again the theme of adoption – after his autobiography Couleur de peau: miel (Skin Colour: Honey) – but this time under the angle of fiction.

3 destinies criss-cross:
Jennifer, the daughter of an American soldier who joined North Korea. The daughter of an absent father, a communist and a traitor, she is rejected by America. She devotes her life to an orphanage in Seoul.
Aaron adopts a little boy and becomes so fond of him that he neglects his daughter: he becomes depressive when his son falls gravely ill.
Doug, Aaron’s best friend, is a soldier and has been an orphan for a long time. He’s the one who pushed Aaron towards adoption. He feels responsible for what is happening.
